Writing this down because there's something worth filing. A cognitive shock that started from the single word "evergreen" followed a thread through social phenomena and ended up in system architecture. The flow itself was interesting, so I'm dumping it here.
1. Singapore and the Cameron Highlands broke my stereotype
For anyone raised in a temperate climate, "evergreen" is welded to the image of conifers — pines, nut pines, always green. Broad-leaved trees turn red in autumn and drop their leaves; "deciduous" is hardcoded into the brain.
That stereotype got its first shake living in Singapore, on the equator. The evergreens there were broad-leaved trees, pumping out huge green leaves in every season. But the real expansion happened going up to the highlands of Malaysia, the Cameron Highlands.
Even within the same Southeast Asian region — where at low elevation broad-leaved trees monopolize evergreen status — at the Cameron Highlands' altitude an ecosystem unfolds where broad-leaved and coniferous trees are mixed and both function as evergreens simultaneously.
That's where I started doubting the definition. "Evergreen" doesn't seem to be a fixed species-level essence of a plant; it looks like nothing more than the outcome of a survival strategy the plant chose in response to environmental constraints (temperature, altitude, moisture). The biological common sense I believed in was thoroughly temperate-centric sampling bias.
2. Structural match with the "flesh color" controversy
This cognitive distortion traces exactly the same arc as the old controversy in Korean society over the crayon color named "flesh color" (살색).
The label sitting unremarked on crayons was the result of mistaking the local data of a closed, majority-East-Asian society for "the global standard of human skin color." Just as restricting evergreen to conifers erases the equator's broad-leaved evergreens, language that defines a specific RGB value as "flesh" pushes people of color — the physical reality of humans across a wide spectrum — outside the system.
Reduce both phenomena to the same structure and it's one thing: mistaking the center's viewpoint for the universal, and forcibly bundling forms and concepts together after castrating the context and diversity of the subject.
3. The ecological limits of the public and the degeneration of PC
So should every individual recognize and correct the world's countless fine-grained stereotypes, moment by moment? Here it collides with human ecological limits.
Humans are organisms with finite cognitive resources. To reduce the brain's energy expenditure under daily livelihood and survival pressure, bundling the world into simplified stereotypes (heuristics) is the most productive and natural ecological choice. Demanding of an ordinary person that they "correct the climatological error in 'evergreen' and verify the racial and gender bias of every word at every moment" runs against each individual's survival strategy — it looks closer to an inefficient coercion trying to force cognitive entropy down.
The tragedy and confusion of the modern political correctness movement seems to burst out exactly here. A refactor that began with the good intent of securing diversity started hanging dense constraints across every domain of everyday language without accounting for the public's cognitive limits.
The result was another exclusive monopolizing force that blocks and attacks anything not matching its own whitelist, and a massive backlash against it. Poke at the system to fix a few minor bugs and the whole society polarizes and fractures — a giant new class of failure nobody predicted.
4. A comment from the system architecture view
All this confusion may reduce to a design failure of the abstraction layer.
Good system architecture hides the complex, rigorous logic of the substructure in the backend and gives the user an intuitive, light interface up front. The cleanest fix for the "flesh color" problem wasn't forcing the public to reflect on racial discrimination every time — it was patching the label to "apricot" at the backend level of the system: the crayon factory and the textbooks. The public gets to enjoy a corrected interface without spending any cognitive cost.
But the modern PC movement looks like it's dragging rules of rigor that should be handled quietly in the backend out to the frontend (the public's everyday language), throwing runtime compile errors everywhere. Every utterance has to pass through a stack of filters, so the system deadlocks and fatigue peaks.
If every fix mass-produces a bigger bug, I think you have to doubt the patching method itself. Rather than a top-down approach that censors and regulates the public's life and language at every turn, guarantee only the minimal common protocol the system can bear (legal equality, equality of opportunity) at the hardware level, and leave the remaining concrete context and language loosely coupled, to autonomous interaction at runtime — that framing sat better with me.
That seems closer to the architectural optimization that prevents an entropy explosion in the enormous complex system called society while guaranteeing humanity's ecological survival. That's how I'm looking at it, anyway.
